Colonial
Cooper |

The responsibility of the cooper was to make buckets, barrels, and tubs. The colonist put practically everything in these wooden containers because there wasn't any rubber, metal or plastic. Some of the items that were kept in the barrels were eggs and liquids. Another significant thing about being a cooper was how they made the barrels. They were made out of wooden planks, which they got from saw mills. Then they would have to shape the containers precisely or else they would leak. The tricky step was to cut the grooves inside the lips of each plank so the barrels would fit tightly. Being a cooper was a very busy and hard job. |
